Rubber Based Vehicle Fuel Tanks – Defence

Rubber Based Vehicle Fuel Tanks – Defence

In today’s theatre of operations, armoured vehicles, main battle tanks, military trucks, armoured bulldozers, fuel trucks and civilian armoured vehicles (VIP) are all subjected to gunfire, IED and mortar attacks. One of the most vulnerable sub-assemblies of these vehicles is the fuel tank. Damage to the fuel tank, although not necessarily at risk of explosion (when containing diesel fuel) can nevertheless easily cause the mission to be aborted and put the occupants in danger of an ambush.

Protecting the vehicle fuel tank of should be a prime concern of all vehicle designers. The traditional protection method is by adding armoured steel plates around the fuel tank. This solution is costly and adds significant unnecessary weight to the vehicle. Rubber based self-sealing fuel tanks and coatings are far superior solutions and offer numerous benefits including enhanced survivability, significant weight saving, reduced armouring requirements, shock resistance, explosion avoidance and more. Coatings are available with protection against 7.62, 12.7 (.50 cal.) and 20mm bullets.

Rubber-based fuel tanks have been in active use by defence forces for over 50 years and have saved the lives of many soldiers. They are fast becoming a standard requirement in new armoured vehicle designs.
